Today was Nemo’s first check-up. We also got to find out what the lumps on Nemo’s neck were. Since it was obvious that Nemo was recovering well from the tooth extraction, our worry was on the lumps. I told Mike that it really didn’t matter whether the lumps were cancerous. Nemo had FIV so it’s certain that it was a bumpy ride ahead of him. It didn’t really matter to him either way.

First thing Dr.Liz did at the check-up was to see how much weight he “lost”. The verdict was that he GAINED 0.5 ounce! Dr. Liz said it was completely unheard of. Most cats will lose their appetite after any operation and lose weight. But nope, not Nemo. Honestly, it wasn’t such a big surprise. For the past 4 days he ate and he slept with no exercise whatsoever.

Dr.Liz asked how Nemo was doing at home and she checked the healing of his teeth. She said he had some food stuck in the stitches but that’s normal. That’s why he needs antibiotic to make sure that he doesn’t get an infection. She cleaned the wounds with some kind of pink fluid.

The preliminary result from the biopsy was out. Dr.Liz said the report showed that the lumps were actually “something, something” (two very long words). Dr. Liz paused and waited for our “Really?!” response. But Mike and I looked at each other with a blank expression on our faces. We asked: “What’s that?” She then explained to us that they were cysts. She said it didn’t make a lot of sense to her so she was going to talk to a specialist about it. I guess we’d have to wait for another few days to find out.

Dr. Liz took off the bandages on Nemo’s neck to check the wounds. To our surprise, Nemo’s hair wasn’t shaved. Apparently they don’t shave when they do biopsy. Dr.Liz said it would change the structure of the lumps. Even though Nemo wasn’t bald or anything, I still wanted to take a picture of his neck without the bandage. After the picture Dr. Liz put on some new bandages. Apparently the green bandage was reappliable like Velcro. If Nemo got it loose we could just re-wrap it.

We didn’t put the pain-relief gel in Nemo’s ear because we didn’t know if it would interfere with the check-up. Dr. Liz said that we should be able to cut down on the gel, or even stop it all together. Tomorrow we’ll be home all day so we can monitor how he does without the gel. The signs of pain we should watch for are: loss of appetite, hiding, and lethargy.

The next check-up was set for next Saturday.

We had a friend’s wedding to go to in the afternoon. A few friends crashed at our home between the ceremony and the reception. Unlike last time when we had a bunch of friends over, Nemo stayed away from us the whole time.
