We took Nemo to Dr.Liz for a final check on his teeth. Dr.Liz gave a us some bad news. Apparently all 4 of his fang teeth would have to go at one point. The chips were deeper than she thought and some of them were crooked already. The gum was red and there’re air pockets at the roots of the teeth. If these teeth were left unattended, bacteria could enter his blood stream, causing all kinds of health issues. It is very dangerous for a FIV positive cat. She said there was an alternative to tooth extraction (root canal) but the cost was very high. A few of Nemo’s teeth were beyond repair so even root canal could not avoid the inevitable. Dr. Liz said that she could just clean the teeth but if it was her cat she would have them pulled. She understood our worries so she explained to us, in length, how it was done. They would extract his teeth, put something hard in it, and stitch it up. Because of the fact that cats don’t use fang teeth to chew food so it will not effect his eating in the future. Apparently it will not affect his handsome look, either. If only one tooth was extracted he would have the “Elvis” look for a while.

We decided to take Dr. Liz’s advise and went ahead to book an appointment for Nemo’s teeth to be pulled on Tuesday. It wasn’t an easy decision because we worried how Nemo would recover, knowing that his immune system is compromised. Finally we figured that if his teeth had to go at one point, better now when he’s still physically strong than later when his FIV has started to surface.

The decision was made. Now we have to prepare for the procedure. Nemo will have to start taking antibiotics tomorrow until 2 weeks after the operation. After the teeth extraction Nemo will not be able to eat anything hard for 2 weeks. The Natural Instinct raw rabbit he’s on now has small bones in it so he won’t be able to eat it. We could feed him Wysong Au Jus rabbit but I don’t want to change his diet while he’s fighting with all the pain. We went to a pet supply store and bought some Ultimate Blend raw rabbit for cats/dogs. This product is from the same place as the Basic Instinct, except that this blend of meat comes without bones and it contains nothing other than muscle meats and liver. We also bought him two new toys for him to enjoy these couple of days and after his operation.
